THE LOGO
Since Dallas Alumni
is the oldest and most prestigious chapter in North Texas and one of
the leading chapters in the Southwestern Province and throughout the
fraternity, the chapter wanted to distinguish itself from other
chapters while remaining connected to the rest of Kappa Alpha Psi.
The effort to “Re-Brand” the chapter was initiated during the Eric
Walker administration and this effort was demonstrated most notably
in the form of a new chapter logo. The logo was designed to give
the chapter a visible symbol of its connection to Kappa, the pride
in its history and the representation of its city.
After several meetings during which
the chapter narrowed down the choices from over 20 designs to a
final top 6, the chapter voted on February 2, 2006. At the
following meeting on February 16th the results were
reported and the new Dallas Alumni Chapter Logo was unveiled. It
quickly became a recognizable emblem within the fraternity and
helped to re-establish a unique identity for Dallas Alumni while
inspiring several other chapters to create their own logos.
Brothers from other chapters including the 31st Grand
Polemarch, Dwayne Murray have been seen wearing the Dallas Alumni
logo proudly.
Brother Byron
Lattimore, who was serving as Keeper of Records at the time came up
with the design and felt it was important that the design be simple,
yet detailed enough to say Kappa Alpha Psi and Dallas at the same
time and be instantly recognizable. The logo can now be seen on the
chapter’s letterhead, marketing materials, website, newsletter,
customized paraphernalia and in the form of a lapel pin. A brief
description is below…
The logo is
composed of 3 elements…the Background, the Lettering and the Symbol
Background
– As the city of Dallas serves as the backdrop for the chapter’s
activities, a large crimson, capital letter D is used as the
background for the logo. The oversized letter also represents one
of the city’s nicknames “Big D”
Lettering - Reading from left to right and
embossed in cream lettering within the “Big D” are the letters
K A
Y. The placement shows
that the fraternity comes first, then the chapter. The word Dallas
is placed on top and Alumni on bottom showing that the chapter has a
high standard of excellence and also fully supports the fundamental
purpose of the fraternity. Est. 1935 (which is short for Established
in 1935) recognizes the chapter’s proud history and chartering year
as one of the oldest chapters in the fraternity. The italicized
cursive font is symbolic of the class and style the chapter
maintains
Symbol –
The symbol is the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Coat of Arms. It is
placed front and center and slightly overlaps the lettering and
background. This shows that the chapter’s logo is connected to the
fraternity’s logo and in no way is meant to overshadow or replace
it.
