LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON

Although he is not the first “legacy” or son of a Kappa to become Polemarch, Dallas Alumni history was made on June 4, 2009 when Byron C. Lattimore became the chapter’s next leader.  He is the first member of Kappa League – Dallas to become Polemarch and when he was installed by father, Emerson Lattimore it marked the first time that both father and son had served as Dallas Alumni Polemarch.  Brother Lattimore, is a Dallas native and graduated from Texas Southern University in 1992 but he joined the fraternity 10 years later in his hometown.  Just as his father had been Polemarch during the chapter’s Golden Anniversary, “B-Latt” is proud to serve as Polemarch during the chapter’s Diamond Jubilee 75th Anniversary and as host Polemarch for  the 74th Southwestern Province Council.

Brother Lattimore has demonstrated a level of discipline, dedication, diligence and diverseness by also being the first Dallas Alumni member to serve as Strategus, Keeper of Exchequer, Keeper of Records, Vice-Polemarch and Polemarch in succession. His training for leadership also includes serving on several committees and spearheading various chapter projects.  Brother Lattimore is both a Grand Chapter and Southwestern Province (SWP) Life Member and has been appointed to posts at both levels.  He was first selected to serve as Chairman of the SWP Newsletter Committee and C. Rodger Wilson Leadership Conference workshop presenter in 2006.  A year later at the outset of the Dwayne Murray administration, the Grand Polemarch appointed him Assistant Grand Chapter Meeting Planner.

Locally, as Polemarch he is seeking to build on the successes of his immediate predecessors, continue to bridge the generations within the chapter and raise even higher its standard of excellence. The theme for his administration is taken from the national theme, “Creating Inspiration by Achieving M.O.R.E.”  M.O.R.E. is an acronym for Maximizing Opportunities, Resources & Efforts.  With a great team of brothers serving in their respective areas, thus far the chapter has grown to its largest size in years with over 90 members.  Dormant committees have been reactivated and while new committees have been created.  Kappa League has been restructured into one of the best youth programs in the city and one of the best Kappa League programs in the fraternity.  The website has been completely overhauled, the fraternity house has been remodeled and the chapter has worked to balance service with social with a series of popular monthly happy hours called “5-Star Fridays” which was the idea of Social Committee Chairman Reginald Pullen.  More great things are in store, as Brother Lattimore will also have the opportunity to lead the chapter as it joins the rest of the fraternity for its Centennial Celebration in 2011.
