A NEW MILLENNIUM, A NEW ERA OF LEADERS

At the turn of the century, when the fraternity began its 10-year countdown to its Centennial Celebration in 2011, a new generation of leaders began to lead the chapter.  Henry Campbell, Esq. a Spring 1989 Nu Alpha initiate, led the chapter as Polemarch from 2001 to 2003 and brought an efficient, no nonsense approach to leadership.

Spring 1992 Dallas Alumni initiate, Dr. Irby B. Hunter Jr. (the son of one of the first black dentists in Dallas, Dr. Irby Hunter Sr.) served as Polemarch from 2003 to 2005 after having served as Director of Guide Right and as Vice-Polemarch.  During his tenure he brought back the chapter’s Black & White Ball and introduced a 3-event, weekend-long fundraiser called High Rollers Weekend. The weekend consisted of a golf tournament, awards luncheon and “Kasino Night”.  During this time the chapter also drafted a long term Strategic Plan and adopted the chapter’s vision statement, “To be the preeminent chapter in terms of: Reputation, Works, Image, Influence and Achievement.”  He would later serve as Chairman of the Board of the Guide Right Foundation of Dallas, succeeding Joe Newton in that role.

Another leader in the field of Medicine and Healthcare Administration, Brother Eric L. Walker (a Spring 1997 Dallas Alumni initiate) followed Dr. Hunter as Polemarch from 2005 to 2007, after having served as Keeper of Records for five years for three administrations.  His leadership, under the theme “Re-Build, Re-Brand and Re-Claim” began the resurgence of Dallas Alumni as a leading chapter within Kappa.  Brother Walker introduced the Polemarch’s Summit, a chapter newsletter, “The Kappa Konveyor”, a new chapter logo and an improved website. In addition, several fraternity house improvements were made through repairs and painting, allowing the chapter to host a Dallas Alumni Charter Day Celebration held in March, “A Salute to The Six” reception and a revamped January 5th Celebration.  The chapter also enjoyed an enhanced image as a result of hosting several successful hospitality suites here in Dallas and elsewhere.  Both the attendance and membership of the chapter and Kappa League increased as a result.

The 34th brother to lead Dallas Alumni was Keith Campbell, a Spring 1997 initiate (Zeta Beta) and another in a long line of Prairie View graduates (Grace, Mitchell, Hunter) to serve as Polemarch. Brother Campbell had been groomed for leadership after having served in several capacities, including Kappa League Co-Chairman, Vice-Polemarch during the Walker Administration and most notably as Intake Chairman, where he had ushered 20 Brothers into our fraternity since 1998.  During his tenure Brother Campbell served for two years as Area II Cluster Coordinator for North Texas.  Brother Campbell was also elected to the Southwestern Province Alumni Board of Directors from 2009-2011. Brother Campbell focused on getting the chapter more involved in the community as evidenced by the theme for his administration, which was “Strengthening our Fraternity, Our Chapter and Our Community.”  During his term of leadership, the chapter received Chapter of the Year in 2008, partnered with Friendship West Baptist Church to raise over $29,000 for the St. Jude Sunday of Hope Campaign and was awarded the 74th Southwestern Province Council (SWPC) in March, 2010.  Brother Campbell worked alongside Brother Walker to serve as Co-Chairmen of the SWPC Host Chapter Steering Committee.  This meeting would mark the first time the chapter had hosted the Southwestern Province Council since 1978 and it would coincide with the chapter’s 75th Anniversary.

This idea was initially presented in 2004 by the chapter’s next leader, who was ushered into the fraternity by Brother Campbell and Brother Walker.
